This 144-page book, slated for release on November 12th through Simon & Schuster, promises to take readers on a journey through previously unexplored regions of Oz, introducing both new and familiar characters.
The creative forces behind this ambitious project emphasized their commitment to staying true to L. Frank Baum’s original vision while offering fresh narratives for devoted fans. Axel Alonso, AWA’s chief creative officer and former Marvel editor-in-chief, stressed that this is not fan fiction but a meticulously researched and canon-faithful addition to the Oz saga. Songwriter Larry King, co-writer of The Lost Lands, shared his lifelong passion for Baum’s work and his excitement to reveal new facets of this intricate world, aiming to deepen the connection for readers without replacing the cherished original stories.
Ultimate Oz Universe: The Lost Lands will introduce a new protagonist named Tip, whose journey will lead readers through uncharted territories as he unravels the mysteries of his birth and inherent magic. Along the way, Tip will encounter beloved figures like the Tin Woodman alongside intriguing new characters such as H.M. Wogglebug. To enhance the reading experience, the graphic novel will feature QR codes that unlock exclusive video footnotes, commentary, original music, maps, and behind-the-scenes content, offering a richer and more immersive exploration of Oz.
This new series, a decade in the making, has involved collaboration with esteemed Baum historians Jay Duncan, Julie McNulty, and Mike Bujnak to ensure accuracy and respect for the source material. Broadway producer Kevin McCollum, also involved in The Lost Lands, highlighted the enduring relevance of Oz, seeing it not just as a place but as a universe reflecting timeless human aspirations.
